MechWarrior Online has grown massively in the five years since its initial launch. The Solaris update will bring in a whole host of changes to the game, but the main course is the Solaris 7 arena. Solaris 7 offers brand new 1v1 and 2v2 competitive modes, the first time MWO has had combat on such an intimate scale. Piranha considers the Solaris update as something of a relaunch for MechWarrior Online, and it shows. All the modes people know and love will still be there, but the Solaris 7 arena feels like something wholly its own rather than just another game mode, with its own dedicated section in the menu. And that new starting point makes me more interested than ever to jump in. The fantasy of starting fresh from bottom of the ladder and fighting your way to top is an excitingly accessible one.

The best thing about MechWarrior Online is the startup routine your pilot goes through every time they enter a match. Some of them are fast. Some of them are slow. Some of them have jetpacks. All of them have guns, whether in the form of lasers, armour-piercing cannon or long-range missile systems. This elimination of what has always been the most tedious part of single-life multiplayer games was a masterstroke for World of Tanks, and it works just as well for MechWarrior Online.
Their role is to provide heavy fire support and soak up damage, and they are remarkably good at the latter job. When you see one of those two you want to get out of their firing line and behind a solid piece of cover very very quickly; they may be comparatively weak for Heavies but they pack a hell of a punch. The combat itself is a complex beast. I once lost both arms, both side torso components and a leg and was still hopping long firing at the enemy with the medium lasers mounted in my centre torso.
Lasers have unlimited ammunition but cause rapid heat buildup; ballistic weapons need their own ammo supplies which carry the separate risk of an ammo explosion if your ammo storage zone is blown out but generate less heat. Lasers fire instantly but must be kept on-target over a period of about a second in order to do their full damage. Ballistic projectiles have a flight time but deal full damage if they hit.
Ballistic weapons do more burst damage but are harder to aim, making them most useful against big, slow-moving stuff.

The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Hello everyone, I haven’t played MWO in a long time. For non WoT players the matchmaking system is based on a template so a battle.
In a move that could be transformative for competitive players as well as anyone looking to settle a grudge, MechWarrior Online has added a private matchmaking system. Dubbed the “Launch Module” by developer Piranha Games, the free-to-play shooter now offers a variety of options for setting up and carrying out tournaments, leagues, and 1v1 showdowns, depending on a player’s level of investment in the game. While basic private match functionality is open to all players, beyond launching a game with a full lobby of 24 ‘mechs, additional customization of private matches is restricted to team leaders with a premium, real-money subscription to MWO.
With premium time activated, more features become accessible, such as selecting specific map, group size, or class restrictions. A detailed rundown of the private match system is carried out in the video below. Tuesday’s patch also includes its share of bugs, unfortunately. With the Launch Module system, MWO was set to make a major change to public matchmaking as well, with the introduction of weight and class restrictions to all public games.
Public matches were to be organized around a new system dividing every pilot team into balanced groups with three ‘mechs from each of the game’s four weight classes.
